Welcome To The “Perimeter Check” Blog and Podcast!

Why We Call It “The Perimeter Check"

In the security world, a "Perimeter Check" is a standard routine. It is the act of walking the line, checking the fences, testing the locks, and ensuring that the boundary between "safe" and "unsafe" is intact. It is necessary work, it is often both proactive and reactive. It is about maintaining the status quo while looking for vulnerabilities.

For thirty years, I have walked that line. I have helped organizations secure their physical perimeters and their policy frameworks. But recently, I realized that "holding the line" isn't enough anymore. The threats we face today—workplace violence, behavioral leakage, societal anger—are not just trying to breach our fences; they are testing our decision-making.

The threats we face are changing, we need to Pivot in order to stay ahead of these threat..

The Anatomy of a Pivot

As a lifelong tennis player and and certified USTA instructor, I talk a lot about the pivot. In sports, you cannot change direction effectively if you are flat-footed. To move from defense to offense, or to react to a ball you didn't expect, you have to plant one foot firmly (your foundation) and rotate the other toward where you need to go.

If you don't pivot, you stumble.

That is exactly where the threat assessment industry is right now. We are stumbling.

  • We are trying to solve modern behavioral problems with outdated "gut feelings."

  • We are trying to manage complex threats with "Multi-Role Protectors" who are overworked and under-trained and wearing multiple hats.

  • We are treating safety as a luxury item for the rich, rather than a basic right for everyone.

We named this blog and podcast The Perimeter Check - Pivot Point because we believe it is time to plant our feet on the foundation of behavioral science and pivot toward a new way of doing things.

What You Can Expect From The Blog

This blog is not just another security news feed. You won't find fear-mongering headlines here. Instead, we are building a resource library for the HR Directors, Principals, and Operations Managers who are quietly carrying the weight of safety.

Here is what we will cover:

  • The "Multi-Role Protector" Series: Practical advice for the non-security professionals who are tasked with security decisions.

  • De-Escalation Pathways: Moving away from "Zero Tolerance" policies that often make things worse, and toward "Care Challenges" that actually solve problems.

  • Democratizing Expertise: Breakdowns of elite-level threat assessment strategies, translated into plain English for mid-sized organizations.

  • Developing a Prevention Mindset: Establishing what a prevention mindset is, embracing the challenge and working to create that culture into an organization.

What You Can Expect From The Podcast

Sometimes the nuance of a case gets lost in writing. “The Perimeter Check Podcast” will be the audio companion to our mission.

We will be sitting down with the people who are actually doing the work—not just the "talking heads" of the industry, but the practitioners. We will discuss:

  • Real-world "near miss" stories and what we can learn from them.

  • Interviews with psychologists, legal experts, and technology innovators.

  • Honest conversations about the anxiety of the job and how to manage it.
